The Digiboard PC/X serial ports adhere to industry standard RS-232 asynchronous serial port with full modem control and hardware handshaking. Each channel is equipped with its own 16450 UART. A 16550 UART option, including FIFO buffers, is also available. Each channel offers independently selectable data transfer rates ranging from 50 bps to 56 Kbps, as well as independent definable character widths, stop-bits and parity. The Digi PC/X board has special interrupt logic to reduce host overhead and improve performance. Each time an interrupt occurs, the host needs only to perform a single I/O read to locate the serial port that needs service, even if multiple serial boards are installed. This eliminates the traditional polling of all serial ports for every interrupt. The result is a substantial decrease in the host CPU overhead and faster serial port performance.
